Shelly Hedges is a visual artist from Ocean Park, Washington. She graduated from Oregon College of Arts and Crafts in 1995 and has since had four solo shows of her work, participated in many national juried group shows and invitationals, and maintained a studio with an artisan line of pottery and tile. She currently works in mixed media textile art. During her residency, Shelly completed seven of the seventeen pieces exhibited in her June show at Oregon College of Arts and Crafts in Portland.
“I was a day resident, so my living accommodations were not an issue. I am sure, however, that they would have been exemplary, as I had the pleasure to dine at both the Guesthouse and the Bay View house during the course of my residency. I was given an entire house for my studio, and the generous space allowed me to work in a very different way than I do in my studio at home. I could work on several pieces at once, as I could keep everything out all the time and always be thinking about what to do next on each project. If I had an idea I could set aside what I was working on and make a sample or start something new. The larger studio and the lack of distractions from daily life allowed me to be far more creative and productive than usual.”
Shelly Hedges’ piece Mary Jane, completed in Oysterville, has been accepted for inclusion in the Fuller Craft Museum exhibition Pulp Function, a survey of contemporary paper art. The show is organized by Fuller Craft Museum and curated by Lloyd E. Herman. Exhibition dates are May 19th, 2007 through January 6, 2008. After the exhibition closes at Fuller Craft Museum, the show will travel to other venues. The travel schedule will be distributed at a later date by the Museum.
