The Espy Foundation is pleased to announce Brandon R. Schrand as the winner of the $1,000 Espy Award for 2006 for an Environmental Essay. The winning essay is entitled, “Eleven Ways to Consider Air: A Local Study,” and tells the story of something as vital and simple as the air we breathe. Soda Springs, Idaho is the setting for this essay that examines both the public issues between a community and the Monsanto Chemical Company and the private concerns of a family dealing with a son with severe asthma.
Brandon R. Schrand teaches creative writing at the University of Idaho. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Colorado Review, River Teeth, Drunken Boat, High Desert Journal, Plainsongs, Talking River Review, Isotope, The Salt Lake Tribune, and numerous other journals. His essay, “Collusion,” was a finalist in Drunken Boat’s 2005 Pan Literary Awards. His nonfiction has also been nominated for a Pushcart Prize. Having just completed his memoir, The Enders Hotel, he lives with his wife and two children in Moscow, Idaho.
